In the African American culture, stepping is said to be influenced by the African Gumboot Dancers. The African gumboot dance is derived from South African miners that worked in harsh conditions during apartheid. They used these dance moves to communicate with one another and to express unity. Our theme for the 2019-2020 school year is “Stepping into Excellence”. To be in step means to be in harmony and agreement, and to be excellent is to be superior; the quality of being outstanding or extremely good. Stepping into excellence is doing outstanding or superior work in tandem and on one accord.
