History

History

St. Philip’s School and Community Center, in South Dallas, has a rich legacy rooted in service, education, and community empowerment. It began in the 1940s when African American Episcopalians established a church to serve their local community during a time of segregation. Over the decades, the institution evolved, adding a community center and gym in the 1950s, daycare in the 1960s, and expanding into an elementary school in the 1970s. Under the leadership of Dr. Terry Flowers in the 1980s, St. Philip’s grew both in size and impact, becoming a PK through 6th-grade school and launching a long-term vision to revitalize the surrounding neighborhood. In the 2000s, the school began hosting the Destiny Award Luncheon to honor national figures who bridge cultural divides. Continuing its legacy of global and artistic enrichment, in 2023 St. Philip’s expanded to include 7th and 8th grade, providing scholars the opportunity to travel to Ghana for their culminating academic excursion. In 2025, St. Philip’s opened the Moody Performing & Fine Arts Center, a hub for creativity and connection.
